Dr. María Jesús Perugorria is a Permanent Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and Principal Investigator at the Biogipuzkoa HRI, where she leads the Liver Immuno-oncology Group in the area of Liver and Gastrointestinal Diseases. She has a degree in Biology (2003) and Biochemistry (2004) from the University of Navarra. He completed his doctorate at the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, obtaining the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in 2009. He has more than 3 years of international experience (2009-2012) at the University of Newcastle (UK), in addition to stays at the University of Paris (France) and the CeMM research center in Vienna (Austria). In 2012 she joined the Biogipuzkoa HRI and after obtaining the IKERBASQUE Research Fellow contracts and the Ramón y Cajal Scholarship, she has stabilized her position in the Department of Medicine of the UPV / EHU. She is the author of more than 70 scientific articles that have been highly cited (H-index 32, > 5000 citations) and is a co-inventor of 2 patents. She has directed 6 Doctoral Theses and is currently directing 2 more. She has 3 Six-year Research Periods accredited by ANECA (2005-2010, 2011-2016 and 2017-2022). She has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Association for the Study of the Liver, AEEH (2021-2024) and a member of the Equality & Diversity Group of the European Association United European Gastroenterology, UEG. Notable is the fact that Dr. Perugorria has received the prestigious International European Awards “UEG Rising Star Award 2019” and “EASL Emerging Leader Award 2022” that recognize the career of the best European researchers under 40 years of age in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, respectively. In addition, she has also recently received the “Recognition for women researchers of Euskadi 2020” for her relevant scientific contribution in the Basque Country.

Main lines of research

  • Identification of new immunological biomarkers with diagnostic and prognostic value in the context of primary liver cancers (HCC and CCA), using biological samples from large patient cohorts.
  • Study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the appearance and development of these types of tumors. Characterization of the role of the innate immune system, and specifically TAMs, in the development and progression of liver tumors (HCC and CCA). Evaluation of the role of these receptors in the pathogenesis of liver carcinogenesis using in vivo and in vitro experimental models.
  • Development of new pharmacological tools with translational impact in the treatment of liver cancer (HCC and CCA). Evaluation of the potential anti-tumor impact of new immunotherapeutic strategies directed at immunological targets previously identified in TAMs. Analysis of the therapeutic efficacy of these strategies in comparison and in combination with therapeutic approaches used in clinical practice.
